Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy
Schneider Family Dentistry uses the soft tissue laser in a couple of different ways in our office.
We recommend every patient have a “laser bacterial reduction” before each hygiene appointment to reduce the bacteria in the sulcus area surrounding the teeth and to reduce the number of bacteria going into the bloodstream during treatment. This procedure works to sterilize the pocket area.
A second way we use the soft tissue laser is in “Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy”. This type of procedure uses a different tip on the laser fiber. This type of tip is ‘initiated’ and will only be attracted to tissue that has disease in it. The tip is attracted to hemoglobin and melanin which is found in gum tissue that has infection. The laser will not be attracted to healthy tissue.
The soft tissue laser removes infected tissue and helps the tissue repair and reattach to the tooth by promoting new collagen growth. Sometimes, it can even stimulate new bone growth.
Following Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy, we recommend following up with your Dental Hygienist 3 to 4 times a year for what we refer to as ‘Supportive Periodontal Therapy’ or SPT. Your Dental Hygienist will discuss the importance of maintenance and how the two of you can partner as a team to stay on top of your oral health.
We are always learning about new ways that our team can work with our patients to promote good dental health and overall good body health.
If you have any questions about our Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy treatment or any other questions you might have, please don’t hesitate to ask. We are here to help you learn about your well-being.
